    19 – 22 February 2025

Americarna - A Celebration of American Classic Cars

    Event Information

    Event starting 19-22 February 2025

Americarna’s first event took place in February 2007, and its founding principles remain unchanged: to celebrate American Car Culture. From classic and vintage to modern and pickups, from hot rods to motorcycles like Harley Davidson and Indian Motorcycles, Americarna welcomes all things American or American-themed.

The event spans several locations, including Opunake, Waitara, Inglewood, Stratford, and Hawera over the first three days. Notably, on Friday night, the New Plymouth CBD is closed exclusively for the entrants’ vehicles, offering a legendary and unforgettable experience enjoyed by both participants and the public.

Inglewood’s Thursday night closed road event draws thousands of people who come to revel in the cars’ presence and the vibrant atmosphere. Schools and organisations benefit from the funds raised through various food stalls, further enriching the community.

A unique feature of Americarna is the return trip to New Plymouth from Hawera on Friday, cruising along Mangorei Road. This spectacle attracts residents from all along the road, coming out to witness the parade of cars cruising past, adding to the event’s allure.

Saturday is marked by the closure of the New Plymouth CBD, transforming it into a vibrant display area for the participating vehicles. Dedicated areas for children offer numerous free activities, ensuring fun for the whole family. The city comes alive with bands playing and thousands of people immersing themselves in everything Americarna has to offer.

Saturday night brings the entrants-only Classic Cover Americarna Farewell party at the TSB Stadium, a cherished event attended by approximately 900 people. It serves as an opportunity to bid farewell to newly formed friendships and create lasting memories.

If you haven’t experienced Americarna yet, it’s an event not to be missed. Register and witness the beauty and excitement of American car culture firsthand. And for those who have attended before, Americarna eagerly anticipates seeing you again, welcoming the opportunity to host you in New Plymouth, Taranaki, NZ.

  • Our History

John Rae, the passionate founder and Event Director of Americarna, has always had a deep love for cars.

His fascination with American vehicles began, like many other Kiwis, through the captivating world of movies such as “Bullet,” “Vanishing,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” and the iconic “American Graffiti.” These films ignited his imagination and sparked his interest in classic American cars.

JR’s attraction to classic American cars led him on a remarkable journey. His first American vehicle was a mid-80s Chevy Blazer 2wd, which served the purpose of towing his race car trailer and even became a daily driver for his wife, Diane. They acquired this special vehicle around 1990, marking the beginning of their American car ownership.

Over the years, JR has owned numerous American cars and trucks, each one carrying its own unique charm and character. While some of these vehicles have been sold to new owners, he currently possesses eight remarkable American cars, each cherished for its individuality and timeless design.

The idea to bring his passion for American car culture to the community of Taranaki emerged during an incredibly popular event where JR and Diane participated with her beloved ’55 Chevy Belair. At the time, JR held the position of Chairman of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce and envisioned organising an event exclusively dedicated to American vehicles in Taranaki. The region’s geographical layout perfectly lent itself to hosting such an event.

To turn his vision into reality, JR reached out to key figures for support. He recalls reaching out to the then Mayor of New Plymouth, Peter Tennant, and the CEO of Venture Taranaki, Stuart Trundle, emphasising his idea and the need for backing from both of them and the Chamber. Inspired by his enthusiasm and commitment, the event soon came into existence, thanks to the creative input of Noddy Watts, who coined the name “Americarna.”

Running the event through the Chamber for two years, John eventually purchased it from them, transforming it into a private entity. Since then, he has been the driving force behind Americarna, ensuring its continued success and growth. To generate the necessary funding for the public component of the event, including road closures, John established The Taranaki Vehicle Events Trust (TVET). It is worth mentioning that several dedicated volunteers, who have been involved since the inception of Americarna, continue to support the event today.

JR’s relentless dedication and unwavering passion for American cars have not only shaped his own life but also left an indelible mark on the community of Taranaki through Americarna. This extraordinary event celebrates the beauty, heritage, and culture of American vehicles, captivating enthusiasts and locals alike. With JR at the helm, Americarna continues to thrive as a testament to his love for American car culture and his commitment to sharing that passion with others.

    Waitara

Waitara, situated in the northern region of Taranaki on New Zealand’s North Island, claims the distinction of being the largest town in North Taranaki. It holds a special place in history, being among the earliest areas in the region to be inhabited by Māori, giving rise to its collection of significant heritage sites.

This town, conveniently accessible just off State Highway 3, enjoys the presence of the Waitara River flowing through its heart. The river offers ample opportunities for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, and white-water rafting, while bridge swinging adds an adventurous dimension to the river experience.

The name “Waitara” is commonly interpreted as “mountain stream,” yet Māori legend suggests its original meaning was “Whai-tara,” signifying the “path of the dart.” An interesting historical note: In 1867, the settlement bore the name Raleigh, in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh. However, in 1904, it reclaimed its original name with the establishment of the borough of Waitara.
